Collectivité territoriale de Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, France
A small part of New France remains under French control in North America in the islands of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon just off the coast of Newfoundland. I lucked out and my stay coincided with the Basque Festival. Saint-Pierre is the capital on the smaller of the two major islands. I took a Zodiac ride across to the island of Langlade, which is now connected to the island of Miquelon via La Dune (a sand dune) forming a single island. Off the coast of Saint-Pierre is a small, largely abandoned island, L'Île-aux-Marins, containing a church, a number of homes (some occupied in summer) and the wreck of a ship.
